Origin of valentine’s day and why people wear red and white

ORIGIN OF VALENTINES DAY

The origins of Valentine’s Day are uncertain, but it may have originated from the Roman festival of Lupercalia or from a Christian martyr named Valentine.
Lupercalia:-
The Roman festival of Lupercalia was a pagan festival that celebrated fertility and the coming of spring. It was celebrated in mid-February and involved animal sacrifice, drunken revelry, and whipping women to encourage fertility.
Pope Gelasius I outlawed the festival in the 5th century AD.

Saint Valentine:-
The holiday may have been named after a Christian martyr named Valentine who was killed around 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus.
Valentine became a popular saint in England and France during the Middle Ages.
The expression “From your Valentine” is said to have originated from a letter written by Valentine before his death.

Valentine’s Day as a day of romance:-
Valentine’s Day didn’t become associated with romance until the 14th century.
Geoffrey Chaucer’s poetry is thought to have contributed to the association between Valentine’s Day and romantic love.
The tradition of exchanging written valentines began in the Middle Ages.

People often wear red and white on Valentine’s Day because these colors are widely associated with love and romance;
red symbolizes passion and desire, while white represents purity and innocence, making them the traditional colors for expressing romantic feelings on the holiday.

Key points about the color symbolism:

Red is the color of blood that pumps through our hearts, which represents love and passion and romance.
Additionally, red was the first color to be linked with Valentine’s Day at Lupercalia in Rome, an ancient pagan festival held each year on February 15.

At the festivities, male goats and a dog would be sacrificed, and the blood of the animals would be wiped on the foreheads of two priests and wiped off with a wool cloth soaked in milk. They would then run around the city naked and “gently slap” women with the cloth as it was believed to increase fertility.

On a lighter note, white are common during Valentine’s Day. Giving your partner these snow-colored florals shows your love is pure,
and since it’s a popular choice for Western weddings, it’s become a religious interpretation of eternal love, too. Plus, not only does a fresh white arrangement look lovely on any table, you shouldn’t hesitate to make the statement that your bond was made to last.

Valentine Colors and their symbols:-

Red:
Represents strong emotions like love, passion, and excitement, often linked to the color of a beating heart.
White:
Represents purity, chastity, and fidelity, often associated with a bride’s dress in Western cultures.
